Bangkok, or known in Thai as Krung Thep, the city of
angel, is the capital
and largest city of Thailand,
located on the east bank of the Chao
Phraya River, near the Gulf
of Thailand. Bangkok is one of Asia’s most cosmopolitan
cities. Created as the Thai capital in 1782 by the first monarch of the present
Chakri dynasty, Bangkok is a national treasure house and Thailand’s spiritual,
cultural, political, commercial, educational and diplomatic centre.

Bangkok Metropolitan area is home to two capitals, the present, Krung Thep and
the short Thon Buri reign before 1782. There are numerous historical sites on
both banks of the Chao Phraya River including one of the world's most magnificent
canal, the Bangkok Noi (RTGS: Baangkork Noi) which has been the main means of
transportation for pre-motor vehicles. It connects to Wat Arun to merge into
the Chao Phraya across Thammasat University. There are no official dates recorded
of the construction of this magnificent piece of architecture however it dates
back to the pre-Thon Buri era, or during the capital of Ayutthaya which could
be reference to as late as 1750's and as early as 1400's. Wat Pho is home to
the reclining Buddha, a marvel of historical sculpture, a Buddha 46m in length
and 15m in height and made of pure gold.
Geography
Bangkok is located in the central part of the country on the low-flat plain
of the Chao Phraya River, which is the most important river that can be compared
to the main artery of the nation. The location is at latitude 130 45' north
and longitude 1000 28' east. It is a tropical land with long hours of sunshine,
high temperature and humidity. Bangkok was established in 1782 as the new capital
of Thailand by King Rama I of the Chakri Dynasty on a flood plain delta of the
Chao Phraya River. The location was then selected with the consideration as
a natural defense from enemies and the richness of water for lives earning.
Since its establishment, the city grew steadily in size and importance which
at first covered only 4.14 square kilometers to now, a megacity that comprises
of 50 districts with total area of 1568.737 square kilometers.
